As everyone is probably aware the iPad 2 is coming out soon. They have started production of them this week. My question is what version shall I get? Is the 3G even worth considering? Can I get a pay as you go contract for the iPad? What memory size is best? Do you run out of space for downloaded movies or do you stream them? Thanks. |

Get the one with the most 'disk space' you can afford because that's the thing you can't change later.
but glib to say but it is if you're going to be out and about a lot. If it's going to be a 'sofa PC' then no, obviously. You can get a 'pay monthly' 3G iPad from the mobile phone makers (cheap up front, same cost over time) or you can get a 3G capable iPad direct from Apple and get a pay as you go data SIM from any of the mobile phone makers and plug that in, which will work. Over the whole it'll probably cost you about the same. There are also a couple of other alternatives you should consider though... Have a look at the 'mifi' mobile devices 3 and a few others do. They're essentially a 3G modem and a wifi access point in a thing smaller than a phone - you switch it on and it looks like a wifi access point to your iPad but it transmits any data to the 'net over 3G, so you can use it (almost) anywhere. if you have multiple devices with wifi you take with you like maybe also a 'proper' laptop or a DS/PSP, or it would be useful for friends to be able to share your connection, thats also worth considering. When I bought my iPad last March, the price of a mifi was about half the extra cost of a 3G iPad over a wifi one and the data costs were roughly the same. The final option depends on which phone you have - some phones can do the mifi trick themselves i.e. you turn your phone into a wifi access point and it does the translation over to 3G. Certain new Android phones can do this now, and the theory is iPhones will be able to do this fairly soon. You'll need to take out a 'tethering' add-on with your mobile phone provider to do this though. And it will empty your phone battery pretty quickly.
As above, get the biggest you can. Even if you don't fill it straight away, you'll wish you'd done so at some point. In fact, given the alternatives I've illustrated above, I'd say buy a bigger capacity wifi only model rather than smaller capacity 3G-equipped one if the prices are roughly the same. I bought the 64Gb wifi only model and I've never actually had issues with it being full. I have maybe 40 apps, 2000 songs, 150 videos (7 feature films in SD res, bunch of music videos & 20 TV shows in various res, couple of video podcasts), 200 photos. According to the system report, I have about 7GB left. As far as apps go, it's games that take up most space. Your typical 'normal app' is less than 10MB but games tend to be around the 100-200Mb mark. I also do stream stuff as well - I have the iPlayer app on there and I also have the EyeTV app, so I can view TV coming off the USB stick plugged into my mac at home. But I've got enough on there to last me the odd night stuck in a hotel for work no problem. Jon |

Thanks for that. Chances are that it will be a 'sofa PC'. I do not plan to take it out that often, so a mifi might be a better option, especially as I plan to get another one later, so could get another wifi version. The first one will be mainly for streaming as my cousin will occasionally stay and will want to watch iPlayer which he does not have. It will also mean that I can delay getting a mifi till I actually need one. As I expect to use it solely within the home. I do not even need to put music on, I have way more than can on it anyway. I can use the remote app to control iTunes. I might put the odd film on and play through VLC, that will need space, particularly the HD versions. I had thought that the 32Gb would be sufficient. I should consider the 64Gb version. I doubt that I will try too many games. Though in future I will put photos on. |

I went for the 32Gb 3G version specifically because there was a 'pay as you go' option from Orange. It costs me very little as it's mostly to keep my calendar, contacts & emails in sync - any heavy downloading is done over WiFi. I find 32Gb is plenty for me - I don't keep much music on mine, though I do have a few movies and TV shows and the closest it's been to getting anywhere near full was when we went away on holiday last year(lots of movies) so for a 'sofa' PC I think it'll do just fine. If you do go for a 3G version I can recommend the Orange deal - if you find you're using it a lot more than you thought you can always upgrade it to a monthly plan. HTH, Pete |

Thanks for all the comments. I think that I will opt for the 32Gb wifi only model though if the price is right I might get a larger wifi model. |

Much as I hate smoke, it seems next week will be when we know what's happening with iPad 2. Source. |

I found a video review for you guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ct1_r_61sk8 Looks slightly bigger than the last one but I am sure that Apple know what they're doing... |

Sorry, didn't know that you are the one who sets the standards for what's funny and what's not. Next time I will consult you before posting. |
