A friend of mine is piecing together an AMD-based system, and wants to get 8GB RAM for it.

I was going to tell him that there's really no point having more than 4GB, even with media players etc open in the background whilst you play a game.

But I thought I would check first, is there any point in getting 8GB RAM? Would Windows 7 even 'touch the sides'?

Really only useful if they are going to do photo / video encoding

No such thing as too much ram, at least with 64bit. whether it's cost effective is another matter.

im getting 8gigs for my Sandy Bridge rig, but only for future proofing/just in case. 4gigs is plenty enough though, and probably will be for quite a few years. i have 4gigs in my Core2Duo rig, and it barely ever goes above 2.5gigs, even in games.

If it's 64 bit, then I'd say yes go for 8GB.
Think of it as 4GB on a 32 bit system.
Much more comfortable.

What's the price difference?
£30? Go for it.
£70? No way.
(I can't be arsed to look up the actual prices)

Programming, web testing with multiple virtual machines...

There are a lot of applications which can make use of extra memory, but you generally need the processing power and a fast disk system to go with it.

My last laptop came with 8GB and it works very nicely, it certainly feels faster than my Core i5 desktop with 4GB, but I tend to do a lot of virtualising.

if its DDR3 hes looking at, the price difference should be about 40 quid. thats how it is for Corsair Vengeance sticks from Scan, anyway

4 gig kit (£44)

8 gig kit (£87)

Prices are so rock bottom atm, that I would do it irrespective of need. They will be going up soon.
