I had an 8800GT in my Mac Pro and replaced it with a 4870, which is definitely better. However I assume the 4670 is not as good as the 4870 so your answer may be less obvious. Have you had a look on barefeats.com or anandtech.com? They both do occasional video card roundups. Even looking on PC specific sites maybe useful, at least to get some comparative info in terms of clock speed etc.
With the ATi cards you also have to be careful exactly what version you're looking at - for example there's an 8800 GS and an 8800GT which are significantly different performance wise.
EDIT :
Anandtech have a comparison between the 4670 and 9600GS. The 9600GS is basically a 'rebadged' 8800GS, so that's a valid comparison for you. Looks like the 4670 shades it but not by much. The 8800GT is apparently about 13% better than the 8800GS, in broad terms. So form that I'd say HD4870 > 8800GT > HD4670 > 8800GS.
As a first rule of thumb I'd primarily consider the card with the biggest onboard RAM to be honest. These days both games and indeed standard OS video functions are highly optimised to be performed directly in the card's RAM and regardless of the amount of grunt the card has if it has to ship more stuff into and out of system RAM rather than keeping it all 'in house' that's going to slow it down a huge amount.
