Hi all,
Got a panicked call from my sister at 1am over the weekend. She'd been working on a file for 12 hours, having opened it from a USB drive (saving every 10 mins). She thought she'd opened it from the hard drive, so when she finished at midnight on Sat, she copied the old one from the hard drive over the new one on the USB drive. Cue tears, panic etc, and a phone call to me.
AFAIK, there's no come back from this. Am I wrong? If there's no file name to work with, no undelete program can begin to work, even assuming by some miracle the old just copied file on the USB drive doesn't occupy the same physical space in the solid state memory as the new version. Thoughts, guys?
Thanks. Diz

I couldn't think of anything myself and a few Googles confirmed that it doesn't look hopeful.
Did she happen to send it to anyone by email or anything?
Sorry, I can't help any further than that.
Maybe someone else will know something I don't?

No she hadn't sent it anywhere. Anyone else got any ideas? Thanks.

Hmmm... Sounds pretty fatal to me. Also there may a lesson to learn, à la image or audio editing, regarding never working with a master file. However I can't imagine that'd be either a popular or a useful suggestion to make just now. Sorry to not be very helpful

Get her to show hidden files, Word always used to use a hidden file to autosave to, there's a chance it might be there. I know Word used to be really bad at cleaning them up...

Looking for Word's auto-saves is a very good idea. She may be able to recover at least some of her work that way.
Additionally, when over-writing a file on a Flash drive it does not necessarily use the same space. It's worth using a program designed for recovering photos from corrupted flash. She can try one for free, although most make you pay to actually retrieve the data.

There are many free apps out there. From the top of my head Recuva and Pandora/Panda recovery have worked for me in the past.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.
