Hey all,

A client of ours has a domain registered and hosted with 123-reg and now want us to upload some web pages - but for the life of me I can't get connected via FTP. They've given me their 123-reg account details (username and password) and it's a .info domain. I've tried looking in the Control Panel at 123-reg and also the Support section, but it's next to useless.

At the moment I've tried...

Server: www.domain-name.info
Username: xxxxxxx
Password: xxxxxxxx

and

Server: ftp.domain-name.info
Username: xxxxxxx
Password: xxxxxxxx

Both are refused by the FTP app (Server error -530). I've tried switching from Passive mode to non-passive mode too - no difference.

If anyone has a site hosted with 123-reg, can they please tell me what I need to be using in an FTP app, or where I can find the FTP settings on the 123-reg site?

I don't know what FTP client you're using, but as a first step I'd try using Filezilla FTP following these instructions.
If it still fails after I'd contact their support.

I've got a feeling it's the username or password that's wrong, as error -530 says "login incorrect" in the log of failed connections. They've only given me their 123-reg account username and password, which does get me into their 123-reg account, but they have multiple domains registered under that account, so I gues each one could have different FTP username and passwords assigned (or do they all use the main 123-reg details?).

Anyway, have requested the FTP settings off the client, as someone else has already put some files up on that domain. Let's see what they come back with.

BTW: I'm using Interarchy on a Mac, which shouldn't pose a problem really, as other FTP servers work fine in that software - but might try an alternative one to test this theory out!

I'd've thought each domain would have it's own FTP username and passwords assigned. So each domain that needs FTP'ing stuff should have different login credentials.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking, but having never used 123-reg before I wondered if all domains used the same username and password - sadly, it appears not!
The client isn't at all technical and just gave me their 123-reg account details, thinking that's all I needed to update their existing pages.

I wonder if I can change the existing FTP username and password for that domain within the 123-reg Control Panel, I'll have to have a dig if nothing's forthcoming from the client.

With their account details, I would have thought you could find out the individual domain usernames and passwords. That's how it works with all the hosting accounts I've ever used.

123-reg host their hosted sites with webfusion.

If you log into 123-reg you can go to the domain name section and check where it's hosted. From there you can get the hosting control panel details to get the ftp details
