I have just installed this on my laptop and so far.. it bloody fast. In a totally unscientific subjective view (mine own) its quicker than firefox and safari on the sites I go to. YMMV

It may take time for me to get use to the change in UI but its not too bad so far.

Not as fast as Chrome, at least not on my i7. It's most noticeable during startup - Chrome is ready to go straight away, IE9 refuses to respond to any clicks for a few seconds.

The UI is also inferior to Chrome, IMO.

In about half of the test, it was faster than Chrome, which is a complete 180° change for Microsoft... Are we seeing another 1984, where they said that closed sites were the thing and the Internet was doomed to failure, only to realise the error of their ways and produced IE in around 8 months?

IE 9 is certainly a huge leap forward for Microsoft. I would say it is on a par with the release of IE 4.

Would love to try it but I'm on XP at work

On an old P4 also so nothing is very quick.

Is it correct that IE 9 won't run on XP machines ?

As AlunD said, yep.

XP is in extended support, which means that it only gets critical security updates. Enhancements, modifications and bug fixes (non-security related) won't be applied to XP. IE9 also uses technology that isn't available in XP, only in Vista and Windows 7.
