Post subject:  Slow DNS responce

We have one client on our network which is resolving DNS very slowly. I've tried everything I can think of, but it's still the same.

It uses the same internal DNS server and gateway as everyone else. From my PC "ping server" responds instantly; from hers it takes several seconds. I've tried 8.8.8.8 just for the hell of it, and it took 10 seconds to resolve bbc.co.uk but again it's nearly instant on mine.

I can ping the DNS server <1ms
I can ping bbc.co.uk ~10mS

What I've done:

full mallware scan
removed antivirus & firewall software
defaulted the host file
reset the IP stack
reset Winsock
reset IE to default
tried a different static IP in case of some clash
tried a different port on the switch

Any ideas? Thanks.

In terms if something to try, have you tried using an external dns server on her machine to see if it's the internal server and her having the issue rather than the server? Probably not much use, but it might help narrow it down.

Failing ethernet port on that machine?

Dodgy lan cable ?

Dodgy network socket?

Yes I've tried 8.8.8.8 which is Google's public DNS server.

I really don't think it's a hardware issue since pings are fine - less than 1mS with no packet loss. If you browse by IP address then pages load fast with no problem. However, I did try a different known working port on the switch just in case there was something weird.

Thanks.

did you reset winsock from the command line? if so, you might find a more drastic rebuild helps
