My gf bought a new Sony Vaio with a 15.4" screen, 1366x768 display and Core i3 processor with 4GB RAM, came out around the 450-500€ mark, so should fall within the budget.
I have the Core i7, with 15.6" display and they are both very nice machines, although the Core i7 model is a little loud - the i7 and the discrete graphics generate more heat, so the smaller model is better, if you don't need out-and-out power.

I have a Sony. It's good except it isn't built to withstand rough treatment. Mine only lasted four months going offshore before breaking where as my old one lasted five years.
