So I've just got my first iPhone (a 3G model) and synced for the first time.
Why are my Mail.app rules not being picked up?
On all the Macs I use all my Facebook notifications get sorted in to their own folder, but that's not happening on the iPhone.

No, it doesn’t, which is an arse. If you can, set up the rules on the server.

I have a feeling this won't ever get done on the iphone. For pete's sake, they can't even manage server side rules on MobileMe and they're ten minutes work with the email server software they're using.
What I have to do, if I'm away from my desk for a extended period of time, is leave my email client open on my mac so it filters all my email for me. Massivley wasteful in electricity terms but it's the only way I can keep my email manageable.

This is the reason I don’t have my main email on my iPhone. The volume of spam which comes in on that account is horrendous, especially now that a company I work for forwards email to that address, bypassing their own server side spam filters.

There is a way of using Gmail as a spam filter, but I’ve not tried it myself. That could do the job for you. I get little spam on my Gmail account.

I use a "disposable" hotmail accout for all my social networking services. Stops the spam building up.

I run all my accounts through Gmail. Partly for the spam filter, partly for the free backup, and partly so I know I have access from anywhere even if various servers are down.

The spam filtering on MobileMe is actually very good - I very rarely get spam in my MM inbox. The problem is the stuff I get that isn't spam. I dunno about everyone else but between notifications, personal emails, mailing lists etc I get about a hundred emails per day. MobileMe web or iPhone offers no automated processing of that stuff, which is the problem I face. It just piles up unless I have Mail running on a Mac somewhere to sort it out for me.
