My BR drive is possessed. The drive tray opens and closes at will, and frequently does a little dance. i.e. the tray will open halfway, then retract half an inch, then open half an inch. ad lib, ad nauseum.

Obviously there is a hardware fault somewhere inside the unit, as it does the same thing when the drive is fitted into my spare machine. Problem is I can't remember which site I bought it from, nor can I find my receipt. Had a look on scan at my previous orders and it isn't listed there, even though I thought that's where I got it.

So, I'm contemplating taking the thing apart but, before I do, will LG honour a warranty; even though I cannot provide proof of purchase?

No. I did consider it but I'm worried that I might brick it in the process, as I don't know if the problems are limited to the controller for the tray mechanism. Any interruption during the flashing process could be catastrophic.

how many interrupts do you consider you would normally get with a firmware upgrade that will take about 3 seconds ? ...

if you place a disk in the drive do you get the same behaviour ...

it also maybe an idea to see if the drive behaves the same way when the system is started in safe mode ...

Well, if the interrupts are linked to the tray movements, I'd say about 2 or 3 times a second.

Yes.

I had to do that with my Sammy DVD drives but they made it pretty painless.

Have you tried another SATA port and/or cable. One drive problem I once had was down to a sata cable worth just pence.

Lo mate,

I'm not worried about firmware upgrading in general, but the drive is acting so flakey at the moment I reckon the flash could be interrupted, and then I'll have a nice looking doorstop.

Tried the drive in a completely different PC, and it's still doing it - so it's definitely a fault with the drive itself.

I'm currently going snowblind looking for the receipt.

Ah-ha.

Defo sounds like it. I was thinking about getting a bluray drive, not sure why, not sure I need one but then do I need a reason?

Out of interest mate is yours one of these clicky

This one mate.

BR Reader/DVD writer - I've been very happy with it until this strange problem.

Does sound a little possessed mate. I only started to look into them when I saw that BR RW drive was under £70, LG seem to have good rep for that and other drives of theirs.

It lives!

I gave up on the warranty thing and took it apart. I had a general poke around and, after finding nothing, put it back together.

It's been working flawlessly for about a week. 8-)

I repaired a students external drive using the same method.
