So, alongside my tax refund and a little bit of other money, I'm looking at upgrading the guts of my main computer, as it has Noah's phone number written on the motherboard.

Currently looking at:

Core i5 2500K
Asus P8P67 Pro Rev3
1GB EVGA GTX 550 Ti SuperClocked
8GB (2x4GB) Corsair Vengeance Blue DDR3 PC3-12800(1600)

Total comes to £475.

Anyone change things around at all?

Usage is fairly standard gaming fair on a not terribly big monitor (1280x1024).

I asume all the other bits are recycled from the old PC

Double check that the power supply can handle the GPU and that yu have the right connectors for it from the PSU as lots of mobos and GPUs now require multiple power connectors

Also do you also splash out and get a SSD as your boot drive?

Yeah, the PSU is a more recent upgrade and is fine with the load. In a month or so I'll get an SSD and Windows 7, but at the moment the aforementioned bits are the biggest problems.

Edit: I've deliberately gone for the EVGA card as I'm likely to try and go for their 90 day upgrade offer.

Probably stating the obvious, sucking eggs etc, but with 8Gb ram you'll need 64bit windows to take full advantage...or linux.

not sure what you're currently running on OS wise.

Yes indeed. I'll probably install a trial version of Enterprise to tide me over until I can buy a full license.

Edit 2: If Lumbthelesser buys my Mac Mini off me then it's definitely SSD and Win 7 out of the box.

That would be a whole pile of win.

Sounds good to me buddy. Had a play with the Asus board on release, before all the fuss and I liked it. BIOS is nice and the layout and build were good.

One possibility - instead of a P chipset on the mobo how about the new Z68 chipset

Could allow for a small (and so cheaper) SSD

From what I've read, there's not a huge amount to be gained from the Z68 boards in terms of SSD utilisation, and it's still working out at roughly the same price for a smaller but similar speed SSD as well...

My current provisional list is now:

2500K Unlocked
8GB DDR3 PC3-12800
Asus P8P67 Pro (over base model as gives SLI)
EVGA GTX 550 Ti Superclocked
60GB OCZ Agility 3 (Read 525MB/s, Write 475MB/s)

Total: £585.69

Basically keeping case, data HDD, psu, odd and cooling from old system. TBH It's a touch more than I want to spend in one go, but trying to justify buying the SSD to the Wench in a couple of months having already spent £480 will be a lot harder than just buying everything now!

Nah, she's a good girl on the whole, certainly doesn't have the shoe fetish that plagues a lot of women. However she has once managed to spend in excess of £500 in a single day on wool...

Oh no, I've just realised that for a fiver more than the above hardware and an OEM copy of Win 7 HP, I could just buy myself the Dell U2711 screen...

Oh dear. Difficult one! Shouldn't you be putting all this cash towards a depo for a house?? ;)

That sounds like a heck of a lot of wool... Was it wrapped around a lamb by any chance?
