Seems that MobileMe will be killed off. Hmm. I wonder what will happen to my iDisk and all the files and folders that I have there. I guess that as iCloud is free, I can fork out for a DropBox subscription. http://www.apple.com/icloud/

Isn't iCloud just MobileMe in a party frock though? Smells like a good piece of rebranding in many areas. No secret Jobs hated MobileMe - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05/09/jobs_swear/

Watch the keynote, iCloud is _so_ much more.

It does look impressive, though I fear I am going to miss out. I use apps that are not going to be recoded for Intel, so I need Rosetta support. This means I can't upgrade to Lion, meaning I lose the iCloud - and come next June lose my MobileMe and DotMac email address. At least I get a year to think about it. I may have to decide to lose the productivity so I can keep the new shiny.

You could do it on the cheap with an iOS5 device to keep the accounts alive.

I would like to know what's going to happen with iDisk hosted sites. Anyone here know?

I don't think so. Even the cheapest iOS device is beyond my budget.

It is a lot less than a new mac. Though can you reclaim the costs against your tax bill?

I don't need a new Mac. This one has at least another three years in it - hopefully. I can claim back the VAT and write purchases off against income tax, but that's not the point. Right now, I don't actually need an iPad or iPod Touch, and I can't afford the premium on an iPhone.

I’m thinking they’re a gonner — whether homepage, iWeb or Gallery. It would have bothered me a while back, but I’ve moved must of my stuff elsewhere in anticipation of such an eventuality. Losing iDisk would be a pain, I use it a lot, notably to host content linked to elsewhere (forums, my blog etc.). It will be a lot of work if i have to fix all those links.

I was hoping that wouldn't be the case. *sigh* I've images hosted there that I'll have to find a new home for now, not to mention editing all the links that point to them. Mark

I use Backup which saves to iDisk so will have to look at what I can replace it with. Though I suspect that Apple might keep this as a billable option.

I have to wonder actually if iCloud won't include some sort of 'ifilestore' mechanism, if not actually iDisk itself. Given they're giving you 5Gb of space, why not make some/all of it available via webdav or some such? I know the long term planning is obviously 'no fileystsem at all'; the whole mechanism of iCloud is to have your files stored online and synced to all your devices and the interface is such that you never care where your files actually are because each 'open document' option goes and finds all the docs that are relevant to that app but there will still be a demand for a 'file locker' for a number of years yet. I don't think we've entirely seen the full story yet - we've only seen the 'free for 5GB' option, I can't honestly see Apple not saying 'OK, you get 5GB for free, but you can have 50Gb for $10 a month' or whatever. Maybe they just haven't figured their pricing structure out yet (it could depend how many people actually sign up) so they decided not to mention it... Jon

Yes I think that they might still offer something as a a paid extra. That can be announced later. The option of cloning a drive and keeping it on the cloud so it can be a back up and also useable on other devices makes sense. Though I doubt whether this will appeal to businesses.
