Folks

My maxtor 1 touch has never really recovered from me going to Win 7 64 bit ......

I'm getting increasingly concerned about the viability of its backups so time to sort it out.

I'm looking for a 1 - 2 Tb of backup capability it can be plugged into main box or on the LAN I don't really mind too much. I'm not planning on utilising it for more than doing back up / holding an image for me to recover to.

Recommendations ?

What interfaces are available, (USB/FireWire,LAN, etc.)?

If it's only to be used for backing up I would go with a straight external drive and forget about network access, as it always turns out to be a complete pain in the backside, (for me at least)

I got a home server, not the most practical but the file sharing, printing and the automated backup were bonuses for me

I'm biased because I do their PR, but I have a 2tb western digital my book studio that I'm more than happy with. (that said, I also have another one that's a POS and doesn't work, but I can't say that they have a high failure rate based on the one I have that doesn't work and if I'd bought it, I would have been able to take it back.)

I believe that some un-biased facts are required.

You have two drives.

One of those drives works. One does not.

That equates to a fifty percent failure rate.

This next statement may be conjecture but I personally believe that fifty percent is a fairly high failure rate.

In case anybody hadn't yet picked up on the theme of this post, I am in a slightly silly mood and although the statistics do stand up to scrutiny the meaning behind the post should not be mistaken for anything other than light hearted banter.

No worries, as i say, i do have a 50% failure rate. I have looked on line and it seems I'm not alone. However, when it works, it's great and, as I said, if you buy it you can have it replaced if it's a duff one. Can't work out if that's a recommendation or not!

Just to add - I've also had a mybook studio fail on me. Device would power up but be completely unresponsive on any interface. IN the end I broke it open and pulled the drive out, which functioned perfectly when put in a USB caddy (although the data on it was lost due to the change in controllers). Damn thing was always temperamental even when it did work. I've had a few of their elements drives which have always functioned perfectly (touch wood) but I wouldn't touch a mybook studio again with a bargepole.

That's pretty much the problem with my failed one. Reckon it's an issue with the chipset or firmware. Weird that one's perfect and one's not. Eventually going to get the drive out and put it in a caddy.

My WD internal is still going strong as is my Buffalo external, both after much caning, if that makes any odds to anyone now ;)

WD Elements 2 Tb was my selection. Thanks for your input folks. :D
