So, I push the power button on my PowerMac G5, it clicks once and switches back off instantly. Repeated several times.
Unplug for a minute of so, plug back in and starts up first time.

Do I need to replace my motherboard battery?

No it solves one of the problems on boots. I had a much more severe problem and this was number one on the solutions, next was a safe boot then a reset of various ram etc. Give it a few days and see if you have problems again.

Mac has been fine for the last few days but today it wouldn't turn on again.

Unplugging and plugging back in sorted it again (I replaced the MB battery while it was unplugged as I had a spare battery).

I'm stumped as to why this has suddenly started happening. I really don't want to have to fork out for a new PSU (about £225 from what I can find on t'internet and that's without fitting).

Have you tried resetting the P-RAM...?
Restart with Command+Alt+P+R held down until you hear the 2nd startup chimes.
:?:

The G4 PowerMacs had a PMU (Power Management Unit) button on the motherboard that you could press to reset the PMU. Not sure if the G5 PowerMacs have the same thing?

I haven't zapped the PRAM yet however I would assume that replacing the battery would have much the same effect.

This particular G5 has a SMU not a PMU apparently, unplugging it for a few minutes resets it.

Ah right, I thought it was just the Intel Mac Pros that had the SMC reset and all PowerPC models had a PMU button, but I must have got that wrong somewhere along the line!

Have you tried just putting the G5 to sleep instead of shutting it down? It only uses a few watts of power in sleep mode.

The very last lot of G5's (the late 2005 model dual core ones) have the SMC, everything earlier has the PMU.

I've never been keen on using the Sleep option. I only tend to have the Mac on in the evenings and not every day so it hasn't seemed worth it to leave it 'on' even in sleep mode.

No, that's not correct.

If the PRAM has been corrupted (the reason for zapping it) renewing the battery will not do this. The PRAM chip needs to be "flushed" hence the need to zap 3 times (i.e. from a cold boot hold down the keys until you hear the chimes for a total of 3 times - a fourth chime will also reset the video ram).

HTH.

Hey Ian!
Great to see you over here since the demise of the MacUser forums.

Good to see you about Ian. I shall have a go at the PRAM reset and see if it works.

Problem seems to be getting worse though.
I'm considering getting a second hand Mac. Has anyone got any experience of using Scrumpymacs? They appear to be in Ipswich (where I have some relatives that I occasionally visit).
