http://www.macworld.co.uk/digitallifest ... id=3294787So who is interested? I will need to work out my needs but I think for straight data I can probably cope with 10Gb.

On my current usage, I'll get by with the free 5GB.
Then again, I'm going to lose it all anyway because I'm not likely to be upgrading to Lion for some time to come. Which reminds me, I need to talk to someone about hosting and stuff...

I can't really see why anyone would need more than 5GB TBH.
Considering that photos from iPhoto (and various camera rolls) don't count towards the 5GB. Music "stored" on iTunes whatever it's called thingy isn't counted in the 5GB. and that it can't be used as a storage repository (AFAIK).
The only things that do count towards it is stuff created from within iCloud compatible apps (like iWork and eventually other apps developed for iCloud) and then "sync-ed" to the cloud.
I would struggle to get over 1GB TBH and that comes free.

Yes but you could have other documents. My backups on iDisk are around 6 Gb, though I suspect that I could trim that.

I suspect I'll not use any of that 5GB that Apple's going to set aside for me.

I thought iPhoto rolls were only free for 30 days, then they are automatically deleted? I currently have around 50GB of free storage, with the various free offerings. I use about 200MB of that in total.

Not quite. From the explanation they gave during the keynote, every photo less than 30 days old is synced. If you don't put the photo in an album, it's erased after 30 days. If you do put it in an album, it stays around until you delete that album. I assume once you hit the 5GB/whatever you've paid for limit it simply won't sync any new content but that actually wasn't explained in the demo. Essentially 'unfiled' photos are considered transitory. In which case it kind of doesn't matter which service you use, as any will do. It seems to me in fact the value in icloud is not the capacity anyway, it's the background sync function. Assuming everything synced is stored on each device, there seems little point to me in having more sync space than the capacity of the smallest device you want to sync e.g. if you have say a mac and a 64GB ipad, there's little point having more than the 50GB quota. Because even if you sync 100GB of stuff up from the mac, you're only going to be able to see ~60GB on the phone anyway, so the syncing is redundant for the rest of it. Unless you want to use it as a backup system, which kind of depends how it works with the 'versions' function in Lion. Jon

Each photo taken on any iDevice is automatically uploaded to iCloud and remins there for 30 days. In that time it is synced down to each iDevice on the same iCloud account. "Giving plenty of time to back up to a Mac". After the 30 days the photos are then removed from iCloud. (They are removed from iDevices unless put into an album as Jon said apart from on your Mac where they remain forever unless you delete them). Once removed from iCloud they can still be synced the usual way through iTunes etc... iCloud just makes it all happen in the background without you having to do anything. However, no matter how many are on iCloud they don't take up the 5GB storage.

It's interesting, because in reality it's the syncing that costs Apple more than the storage. Storage is really quite cheap these days, but bandwidth is still expensive. Obviously they get it cheaper than I can, but even so.
I've noticed quite a few problems with dropbox recently due to poor bandwidth at their end on the free accounts. I can't help wondering if their business model is under stress, because for me my 5GB free allowance is more than enough but I use the bandwidth a lot. The biggest problem is the iPad because from what people say, it's about the only easy way to transfer all your films onto it and you could be doing that every day!

I use it to sync my password manager, and a couple of programs. I use wifi to sync my task manager and I stream videos and music wirelessly. So drop box is not used massively. Though I do use Mobile me a lot to sync address books and contacts.

I'm sure that the free 5GB will be fine for me. My current MobileMe storage is used for my email and the occasional file transfer via public iDisk.
Is the whole of iCloud dependent upon running Lion as your OS X version?
What's happening to me.com email addresses

The me.com email addresses remain as they were and I'm pretty sure iCloud is dependent on running Lion - or at least parts of it. There's an Apple document here. Clicky

Having read the article I'm not really sure that iCloud is going to have anything to offer me since the main things I'm currently using MobileMe for are my email and file transfer using my Public Folder on iDisk.
If I can't make files available to other people using documents in the cloud (not very clear from the iCloud infor), then I'm going to have to shell out for some dedicated FTP space and I might as well get a proper email package at the same time. Plus I won't be tied into having to upgrade to Lion...

I’m moving over to Dropbox — using symlinks to link my Dropbox to other folders on my Mac: http://wiki.dropbox.com/TipsAndTricks/S ... ers#MacOSXFor linking files I’m using FTP and my own webspace or box.net though I may just use Dropbox’s Public folder, depending on space/cost: http://www.dropbox.com/help/16
