Have you looked at Handbrake?

Only if they are already in a format iTunes can cope with...

Handbrake + vlc will allow you to convert most formats, including DVDs.

+1 for Handbrake, and as Dave said, depends on what your source is. Handbrake's the best start point though.

Caz hasn't been back, but we sorted it out over IM. Pointed her to a tutorial on Handbrake and everything is peachy. :)

You haven't got a recent nVidia graphics chip in your Mac have you?

Badaboom! is a very quick converter which uses your graphics card as a processor. Can use almost any format, and ripped a full DVDs worth into MP4 in about 5 minutes. :)

And it relies on Windows. ;)

It's also needs a fast GPU to see the benefits and that's still a bit of a sore spot for the mac.

Best stick to Handbrake!

iSquint may be what you want.

Works well but it - and it's bigger brother VisualHub - are 'orphanware' - the developer has stopped supporting it and effectively walked away. You'll have to work hard to find somewhere to even download a copy. There's a new product based on the same code

videomonkey

but frankly it's not really ready yet - for example when encoding it will only run one thread (or at least it's limited to a single core) whereas VisualHub will use as much CPU as you can throw at it.

A Google for iSquint gives you this as the first hit:

Well that's actually quite unusual. MacUpdate as a rule doesn't serve downloads itself, the 'download now' link just points to the download page of the relevant maker's web site. They obviously kept a copy of the .DMG when techspansion took the huff and are supplying it themselves. Good on them for that.
