Folks a mate has asked me for help and I'm stuck.

He has a domain and hosts a web site with ( I think BT / Ntl ) but wants to move it to another host, probably 123 or google sites, in the not too distant future.

However in the mean time he would like to start using his domain name email which is currently not used.

If domain site sits with BT how the devil do get mail set up from some where else for him?

He used Outlook express to send / receive and would like to continue to.

Your assistance will be appreciated.

Find a service which offers email (POP3, IMAP or hosted Exchange), set up an account and then edit the DNS entry and point mail.domain.co.uk to the mail service (MX record).

It rather depends on what services "I think BT / Ntl" offer. I'd expect the domain to come with a pop3 account which you'd just set up in OE the usual way. If it's a forwarding account only, then set him up with Gmail.

Of course, if he's migrating to a different service in the near future then anything complicated seems a bit unnecessary. Once the domain moves to 123 or whoever, you'll have all the usual tools you need.

You don't seem to certain of what he's got arranged at the moment, so I'd clarify things properly with him. Maybe get his login details and have a look for yourself.

Also, do bare in mind that Outlook Express is now very obsolete and it can be a real pain to migrate emails to newer clients. Either Windows Live or Outlook have a very similar style.

Yes that's on my list of things to cover.

Thanks for your help. :D

Use Google Apps, you can install it on your own domain & you'll then have the very pleasant Gmail interface but with e-mail from your own domain (e.g. abc@abc.com). It's free for personal use too.
