iPhone micro USB adaper

Available to buy but I think you can expect them to be bundled in with the iPhone 4S, given they become available the same day.

Not quite the solution I was anticipating.

Really? It's bang-on the solution I expected.

Me too.
Perhaps the next gen will have a USB charge port. I doubt if it'll have the I/O capacity though.

You'd think they'd see sense and put the USB port directly into the phone, rather than supplying a superfluous accessory.

It is not the solution I had hoped for, but it is the solution I expected...

Apple were never going to put a micro-USB socket on the current design of iPhone. Firstly they're an American company with an American-centric view, they're going to design essentially round what their local legal requirements are and deal with anyone else's later. Secondly, they were never going to punch another hole in the case of the iPhone 4, nor were they going to find space inside for the socket to fit. Thirdly, they aren't likely to abandon the 'dock connector' ecosystem any time soon. There are thousands of models of accessory out there with dock connectors on them, you think Apple would just chuck that industry (and the goodwill it creates for them) away because the EU tells them to?

Nah. Never going to happen.

Er what? After all the outrage over the butchering of Final Cut Pro, Lion compatibility issues, making software Intel-only and abruptly ending support for PPC Macs etc etc and suddenly you think Apple care for third parties?

And funnily enough, since the European Union is the largest market in the world, yes, I expect compliance.

You're really comparing the number of people who own Final Cut Pro to the number of people who own iDevices? Really?

Maybe to some but not to Apple. And destined to be less so in the future

They have history of doing just that. They dont care about third party accessory suppliers because they know they will change their designs to keep with Apples market.

+1. They dropped the firewire support and they altered the charger so 3GS phones needed new kit.

You seem to have a funny definition of "abrupt".

Jun 2005 --- Announces switch to Intel.
Aug 2006 --- Intel transition completed.
Aug 2009 --- Snow Leopard (Intel-only) released.

So three years to the month after moving completely to Intel - and almost four years after announcing the move - they finally release an OS that doesn't support PPC. And of course, all those PPC Macs still running Leopard continue working beyond August 2009.

You can expect all you like, but Apple could probably do quite well not bothering with the EU at all. I'd see them focussing on far more dynamic regions of the globe than the economic basket-case that's the EU right now.

So you think Apple should ignore a market that generates ~30% of it operating revenue?
