Interesting:
http://www.silicon.com/technology/software/2011/07/22/itv-ditches-windows-for-macs-and-google-apps-39747729/ A friend's company is also making the move over to OS X from Windows, except this time they're sticking with MS Office, after trialling Pages and Numbers. What I gather is that during the trial period, only some of the machines were moved to Mac, and of course they then had problems sending MS documents to the PCs elsewhere. Of course, once all the machines were Macs and running Pages, that'd be much less of a headache internally. |

So how is moving from windows to macs and google apps going to improve creativity? Changing the tools used isn't suddenly make people more creative if their not creative all ready. |

I'm not sure that's necessarily true; equally I'm not saying there exists some universal 'creativity' panacea that will create it in everyone. What I actually suspect is there's another reason, but 'improving creativity' sounds cool. |

Certainly more PR-friendly than what I suspect is the actual reason, that being "it's much cheaper and we can make a few staff redundant". Jon |

Cheaper, until... The problem with cloud services, especially Google, Amazon, Microsoft etc. is that they are American based (any cloud service with an office in America will be affected, they don't need to be American based). That means, that they are subject to the Patriot Act, which means they will just hand over their customer's data upon request, even if that data originates or is held outside the USA. That is at odds with European Data Protection law, which states that any personal information that is handed to third parties outside the EU must have the agreement of the person(s) affected - that means, before Google hand over the data to the US Government, ITV has to write to each person and company whose information will be handed over and get their approval... There are two problems there 1) Google are not obliged to inform ITV if they are requested to hand over the data to the US Government and 2) even if ITV were informed and they asked for permission, the data of those that refused would still be handed over regardless, because it isn't Google's problem, they are complying with the Patriot Act. The real kicker is, Google are responsible for the breach of Data Protection Law, ITV are the suckers who will be prosecuted or sued in the UK! |
