http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac ... 585/reviewI've the feeling that most people in that market would buy the Air anyway, but I'll have one of these about five years from now

Well, yes, you'd have to say it is. Doesn't sound quite as nice as the MBA, but it's slightly cheaper. That's a fair bargain to make if it meets your needs.

I prefered the new Lenovo UB, but the Asus isn't bad.

Having fawned over one on Saturday, I'd say THIS COULD BE. I WANT. And it's my 30th soon. Hmmmm.

Er... what? That's almost exactly the same spec as the base 13" macbook air for an even more ludicrous price. You really want to pay $400 for an ethernet port?

Is that at me? If so, well to be honest I was responding based on how I percieve the idea of an ultrabook - ie. a delight to hold and behold, and not all that practical. In which case, yes, I'd still go for the Samsung - not least because I'm bound to Windows by Autodesk's allegiance with Microsoft. In all reality though, I'm actually more interested in Samsung's 7 series.

You can boot a macbook into windows you know, you just have buy a licence. Seriously the price of that Samsung is just mental. I had a Samsung netbook, very happy with it I was. Non complaints about the quality of their kit at all, bout they're taking the mickey selling an Ultrabook at that price, really they are. In fact, my spell checker just wiggled 'ultra book' to 'unreal book'. That's probably a better name for it. Jon

They're pretty much all a compromise these days - all the ultrabooks are going to have limited travel in the keys as it is. But my biggest beef is with the insistence on the numpad (on larger laptops) why we just can't have a standard layout without one, and just have the home/end buttons vertical like this : I don't know.

Because the numeric pad belongs to the "standard" layout. The keys between the main paid and the numeric keypad were an afterthought... IBM brought them in with the AT, a couple of decades after we had suffered without them.
