Apples recent Java update (the one that brings Java to version 1.6.0.29 I think) appears to have broken Java in Firefox (version 8 on OS X 10.6.8). A quick look around 'tinternet suggests this also affects Firefox on Lion. Anyone else seeing this behaviour? |

Would OpenJDK be an option? (IANA Mac User) |

I know it didn't used to be possible. Apple would take Sun's JRE and modify it to work with OS X. IIRC Apple have handed the work back to Oracle, but I don't know what's currently happening... I'm not immediately sure how, but you could try uninstalling Java and install it again? |

I guess I could roll back using Time Machine but as it's only Firefox that's affected (Safari is fine) it seems a bit drastic. The Mozilla bugs blog has a running commentary on it so they are aware of the problem - seems to be a combination of something Apple have done and something Firefox is doing so a bug fix should be coming out at some point. |

If other browsers are fine (my Safari and Chrome are) then it suggests that Firefox might be doing something odd... |

BEAST, used Java to hack SSL (all versions)/TLS 1.0, and for security reasons, Firefox have disabled the Java plugin (all platforms). TLS 1.1 and 1.2 are not susceptible, but Firefox hasn't implemented 1.1 let alone 1.2 - the former is only 6 years old and was only developed to get around the problem BEAST has exposed. The bigger problem is, most of the web servers still use SSL or, maybe TLS 1.0. |

I had to reinstall Firefox the other day after this update. A site I use that needed Java caused it to crash & burn when I closed the tab it was on |
