Is it worth sticking a SSD in a 3 year old laptop?

It's a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo with a AMD Turion x2 Dual core running Vista 32bit

It's not as bad laptop but though I could give it a new lease of life.

If I did get one what is the best way to keep it running nice and quickly on Vista?

Cheers
Rich

How much memory does it have? If it's not maxed out, I'd do that first. But yes - it would probably feel like a new machine after a clean install onto an SSD. Certainly made my netbook feel a lot faster.

Windows Vista doesn't support the TRIM command as far as I know.
You may well find that the SSD performance degrades over time.

* Double checks with google *

Quote:
Vista does not support trim however the may be utilities from the SSD maker or others
that work. Check with the SSD's maker. i.e. Intel has their Optimizer. G. Skills Falcon
Series has Wiper.

Crucial have their own garbage cleaner too.

The laptop has 3gb of DDR2 JJ

Is anybody on the forum using Vista with a SSD?

It will benefit hugely, performance wise.

As for trim, just put wiper, or an equivalent, on your drive and run it as a scheduled task.

I'm writing on my GFs PC here that has Vista (yay @ home today! :D ).

It's been fine for a long time after they patched all the faults, never had any issue with it since then TBH.

I was going to add that many people claim a fully patched up Vista is little different to Windows 7.

I'd have to agree TBH. I have W7 on my PCs upstairs, I notice no difference aside from the cosmetics ones.

I'm not buying a copy of 7 for it and as for An alternative OS.... no way after my fustrations of linux on a Eeeeeeeeepc I brought ones (what was all that about  )

I've got Vista64 Ultimate on my main gaming PC and it does me fine :D

Edit - So Stick with Vista and a program like wiper and a good 120gb SSD.... any suggestions for around £120 - 130?

I'd suggest the Crucial M4 but that's about 140-150 at the mo, I managed to get mine from crucial when they had 10% off and I had a 5% discount code though so it was £136.67 and then something like £5+ more for quidco.

I'm sure there will be a few pre christmas deals though if you can hang about for a little while.

Vista is fine, especially after SP1 was released. It is more performant on my iMac than OS X Lion!

Amazon.co.uk do a selection of SSD's
I recommend the crucial M4 as is what Have in all my comps. But the 128GB one is about £150 on Amazon but may be able to get cheaper elsewhere if google it.
