So, I've been setting up my new Mac and I've been downloading my music and stuff to my new Mac. I may do this via USB drive but it'll prob take just as long to transfer stuff.
Anyway, I've got a "purchased" section in my iTunes and it shows all the TV shows and music albums that I've bought but none of the movies?!
Is there a way to re-download my previously purchased movies to my new Mac? I can de-authorise my old Mac but I don't want to do that until I know everything will be put onto my new one.
Thanks for any help.

Can't you do Firewire target mode? Or USB target mode, if one of the machines doesn't have Firewire.
I have a NAS which has all my music and photos replicated and I just copy it back down from there, which at gigabit speeds is faster than USB and much faster than re-downloading the music. Then just sign into the iTunes store and authorise the machine.

Just drag the iTunes folder across, this seemed to work for me.
If you're happy with the setup then Migration Assistant can do all the transferring for you over the network.

Ah, I had forgotten about target mode.
I don't have a USB to USB cable though. Only USB to mini/micro USB.
WIll have to hunt one down and I'll give that a go.

Why do you want to be in target mode? Can't it just be done over the network? I'm fairly sure it might be able to work over a standard ethernet cable plugged between the two machines...

MacBook Air - no ethernet. I could do it over wireless but it'd be quicker over USB I think.

Ah right.
There is no target disk mode for USB, btw. At least not according to Wiki. So it's either via a USB hard drive or WiFi.

Ah, rubbish. It has Thunderbolt (which I didn't realise) so I was wondering if there was a enclosure for a 2.5" HDD?

Haven't seen any enclosures yet. Only complete drives and RAID arrays. minimum price for a Thunderbolt drive of any sort is currently about 400 quid. Jon

Yes but I don't want it all. I only want the stuff I want (if that makes any sense). One thing I was waiting for is to be able to de-clutter the whole OS and keep everything tidy. I don't want to restore a big mess of files as it will just get worse from there  Having said that, I don't know why I don't just use the HDD to transfer files etc... Once that's done I'll prob start the TM backup fresh on my MBA.

And rather than copying everything from your old laptop, you can just go in to the backup folders and find the stuff you want. More faff, but less time

Well I've got my Movies over. I just click dragged them out of iTunes onto my USB and then did it back into iTunes on my new MBA.
TBH I think I'm just going to let iCloud re-download everything as the iTunes Music folder on my old MBP is +50GB but in reality I only have 15(ish) GB of music.
I just realised that I don't have a USB A-B cable for my TM drive so if I want to do everything via that I'm going to have to wait until next week (get one from work).
I'll just persevere with this.

Hmm, I thought they had adapted Target Mode, when the released the original MacBook Air, guess I was wrong.

According to this page on Apple's site... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413...the options for Migration Assistant are: Firewire Ethernet Wireless (Airport) or Time Machine backup (or other disk) I too thought they'd added USB when the original Macbook Air, but I guess it was Ethernet and Airport that I'm getting confused with.
