Post subject:  Wireless repeater?

I have an old D-Link 4port wireless-capable ADSL modem/router, and I want to set it up in the kids room to provide access for the PC and Xbox 360 in there to the main Netgear router downstairs.

Problem is, I don't know where to start. Is this a straightfoward thing to set up? It sounds like it should be, but I have doubts.

I had a look at DD-WRT, but I can't see my old router on the compatibility list. I don't mind risking bricking it with an imperfect firmware.

Any clues, anyone?

Can you clarify what you're trying to do? Are you:

A. Trying to get it to act as a client, and wirelessly bridge to the Netgear to provide a wired connection via it's 4 port switch
B. Connecting it via a single wire to the Netgear, and using it as a Wireless gateway for the room which is otherwise out of range
C. Act as a wireless repeater, as per the title.

B is easy. A and C depend on the hardware and may be impossible.

Option A is what I'm after.

TBH, I thought A and C were the same thing.

A is a wireless bridge - it connects two wired networks using wireless.

Wireless repeaters extend a wireless network wirelessly by literally repeating the signal back and forth. You stick them in a cupboard half way in-between, and to be honest they don't often work very well.

Can you post the exact model number of the D-link? Some of them are more flexible than others. To be honest, if you look through all the menus and can't find anything that says "client mode" or "bridge mode" then it probably wont do it. However, some of them definitely will.

Make and model number D-Link DSL-G624T

I've been throught the menus and I didn't see anything for bridge or client mode.

I'm guessing mine is one the the less flexible models.

I had a quick Google and I think it might work, although linking Wireless from different vendors may not be reliable. You may need to downgrade to an earlier firmware, since WDS was apparently removed later on.

ftp://ftp.dlink.de/dsl/dsl-g624t/driver_software/

Hopefully that gives you something to look at. Please do some careful research and don't blame me if you brick it :P

Thanks JJ, I appreciate it.

I'll give it a go and let you know how I get on.

Cheers. :D

So far, so good - the firmware downgrade worked, and I know have bridge mode available in the setup. :D

I don't quite understand how I get it to talk to the main router yet, though. More reading is required.
