Post subject:  Email delivery filtering on Android phone

Couple of weeks I've bought Samsung Nexus S (prev. gen. Nexus) and I am using it together with my trusty old Blackberry, trying to see if I should switch to Android or not. One thing I need help with is filtering which emails are delivered to my Nexus.

With BB it is easy, just set up filters on BIS for the emails that are not to be delivered. For example anything that has "newsletter" in the sender's field is not delivered. Or some specific addresses like "somebody@somewhere.com"...

How can I do something like that on Android? I've noticed that filters I have set up previously with action "skip the inbox" are not delivered but I hoping for something more sophisticated that would work without straight archiving. I know I could set up a label that would be the only one delivered but that would be only delivering specific emails. I am looking for something that would NOT deliver specific emails. "Everything but these" rather than "Only these"...

I’d suggest server side filtering if this is a real problem for you. I assume that you have access to your email server’s control panel and therefore filtering rules. Just lob all the dodgy ones into a “potential spam” folder (just in case of false positives) and check them on a PVC later, where you can delete or keep.

That's the thing, there is no server (I assume you meant something like Exchange). This is just a regular gmail address that average Joe has.

In which the only thing I can think of s leaving a "slave" computer on all the time, running your email client which connects via IMAP and filters as emails come in. To me, this is idiotic. You should be able to run filters and rules on your phone/tablet.

Surely just create rules on the Gmail site? I've got shed loads of filters on there.

IMO, it's becoming increasingly less useful to filter on clients, especially mobile devices.
