Major Geeks has posted FIreFox 10.0.1 as the latest "Final" release, yet Mozilla's latest release site http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/latest-10.0/win32/ does not (at this time) contain such a version. Is 10.0.1 legit?

Can you post a link to the Geeks site? They're usually pretty good, but I can't find that article so can't really comment. Maybe 10.0.1 is coming soon?

+1, though Linux tends to get updates later than Windows.

I'm not aware of a 10.0.1 version tbh.

Didn't Mozilla announce, that they were switching to silent background backups and wouldn't be displaying the version number from now on?

Ooooo

I vaguely remember something along those lines, yes. But I'm not sure if it's Mozilla that said it.

What, kind of like Windows Updates? Millions of patches, and then a service pack or new release every so often?

More like not explicitly notifying users of minor application updates. It's how a lot of OSS projects work:

Version update e.g 3.0.1 to 4.0 - notification and permission sought
Major update e.g. 3.0.1 to 3.1 - notification given (& permission maybe sought)
Minor Update e.g. 3.0.1 to 3.0.2 - little or no notification
Tiny update e.g. 3.0.1 to 3.0.1.1 - definitely silent update.

(*numbers are generic nonsense btw)

I don't like the idea of silent updates.

Some projects give you the option of having the very latest pre-release version, which is great if you want to be involved. However, I want to be in control. My browser is ridiculously important to me, and I don't want to update until I've had positive feedback from a few million users. This is why I am running 10 and not 11.

No, like Chrome, silently download a patch in the background and don't tell the user. They are always on the latest version and don't have to worry about how or why they should update.

Great for private users, not so good for corporates, which want / need to roll out updates in a controlled way, after testing.

Thanks for all the feedback folks. Mozilla does now list 10.0.1 for all supported OS http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/10.0.1/ :)
