Post subject:  Flashing BIOS on Asus EEEPC

Quick question - one of my customers came in today with a month old EEE PC that won't boot due to BIOS errors. Curry's (from whom he bought it are unable to help beyond sending it back). I'm at home now and the machine's at work, so I just wanted a quick bit of advice. I assume I ought to be able to flash the BIOS off a USB stick? Will this make Win7 think it's new hardware and refuse to boot or validate?
All advice gratefully received!

BIOS change shouldnt make a difference to Win7, worst case you will have to call up and put the code in, last time I had to speak to someone on the phone regarding a reinstall was back on an XP machine

Does it boot from a USB CD drive? What's the actual error message?

To be honest, if it's so new and obviously under warrenty then I wouldn't touch it - send it back and get a new one.

Being that new, it must be under warranty.

TBH I'd leave well alone.

Oh, and I'd suggest using the Asus warranty rather than the Curry's one if possible. That way it won't just be poked about, scratched, left in a corned for 3 weeks and sent back still broken.

Thanks for the replies. My initial reaction was to tell him to take it back, but Currys want to send it away for repair, which will take up to 3 weeks, and he needs it for travelling in a few days.

I'll have a tinker....

Update - the thing's knackered. I downloaded the latest BIOS from Asus, but it refused to install it.
I still don't get why people buy these crappy netbooks...

They're only crappy if they're knackered!

The Eeeee is actually pretty well built. I know a kid who's had one for several years, and it's survived some pretty brutal handling.

I'm very fond of my HP mini, which out performs in every way a more recent model Toshiba laptop costing twice as much. It's also very much better built than the Tosh.

Frankly, the only advantage I can see of a full size laptop is for visually impaired people who don't actually have to carry them anywhere!

have you tried a live linux disc ?
if it will not run a live linux disc it should give you error messages which may help
if it does run the distro live, then try installing the BIOS update via the live linux distro ...
