A mate asked an interesting question yesterday.

His BB is to an office above his garage, uses standard BT wireless router, all is fine.

However ( yup there is always one of them ) he cannot get wireless in the house which is a separate building with a separate power supply.

My thought would be to buy a half decent router run a cable to the house and have a have a ......... in the house.

Can you add a wireless booster in that sort of config or a switch with wireless capability?

Your advice will be appreciated.

If I understand correctly, then you just need a wireless access point. You can get a cheap one for £10 or you can reuse most wireless routers as an AP by simply turning off their DHCP and making sure their IP address doesn't clash with anything.

Run the cable from the BT router to the location in the house you need up to 100 meters in length. Plug the cable into the AP and into the BT router. Done.

Your hardest part will be terminating the wire. You can either buy RJ45 ends and a crimping tool, or buy a couple of RJ45 sockets and and an IDC tool. The latter would look more professional in my opinion.

The more recent BT HomeHubs are very good btw. You'd be hard stretched to find a more powerful wireless router.

just a heads up about the HH3 (if it is a HH3)
it has open ports by default which can not be closed (port 53 as an example) also you can not set independent DNS (such as openDNS) within the HH3 and by default BT set the HH3 up as a wireless hotspot which requires a long phone call to get disabled
