Can anyone recommend a good package for scanning to PDF format?
We have a Brother MFC, which is great, but the supplied software makes a complete hash of scanning to PDF.

I looked at two programs a couple of months ago and can't remember which ones they were now. It was on my parent's computer so I can't check at the minute. If I had to guess then it would be softiscan. It is free for trial and I only needed it for one job so i didn't consider cost, but it did work reasonably well iirc. Importantly it gives you good control on multi-page documents, including previews so you can easily see what pages you've already scanned if you've been distracted by a call or something.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I use VueScan as its 64 bit driver works with my old Epson scanner and Win 7.
Straight to PDF and virtually anything else you want as well.

Which OS? Does it need to be particularly clever? I'm happy with Simple Scan: https://launchpad.net/simple-scanIt handles multiple page text documents particularly well and with no effort.

Asking for a software recommendation is like waiting for a bus.

Like it or not, PDF is the best portable document format we have. There are alternatives you might argue are superior, but they're not very portable since hardly anyone can read them...

That's rather the point I'm making - it's the only Portable Document Format.

But it's not portable... you can guarantee your CV or whatever will look sh!t when the most important person opens it.

Windows 7 64-bit and it needs to be reliable, easy to use and give good results. It is for my boss and he is not a patient man, so it needs to "just work", without having to fuss around with settings etc. Thanks for the suggestions everybody. I'll give them a look.
