The office have just sent a new (well new to us) laptop out to the rig. (I'll save the rant about it's specs for a different thread.) For some reason neither IE or FF could connect to the internet. Looking at the status bar on both suggests the laptop is trying to go to guidetest.a.id.opendns.com instead. It does this no matter what I type in. A quick googling suggested using the command prompt and the ipconfig/flushdns command. - It didn't work. I've also been into XP's network setting for the wifi connection and checked that the TCP/IP properties say "obtain DNS server automatically", but unlike all the other computers in the office is still won't work. Is there any way to get the internet to work in the normal way on this laptop? ie connect to the network and off you go with the internet? |

What I'd do - got to one of the other machines and do ipconfig (with no switch) on that. Note down the IP Address it's using for DNS. Then go back to your wonky machine, untick the 'obtain automatically' tick box and type in the IP address in there. Dunno why the lappy is 'sticking' with OpenDNS, but that should at least force it to use the same one as your other local machines. (BTW, IIRC ipconfig /flushDNS doesn't cause a PC to redo it's DHCP, it just tell it for forget all the DNS results it's looked up recently and cached. Much more useful if you change the IP address of something else but a PC still wants to got to the 'old' address. I think the command for what you wanted to do is ipconfig /registerDNS) Jon |

are there any maunally added entries in the HOSTS file maybe? and besides the good suggestions made by jonbwfc, I would also look into the internet settings in IE, go to the connections tab, then into the LAN Setting menu, and make sure there are no Proxies configured that would prevent you from hitting the interwebs.. ive seen some spyware that does this... |

Has the (ghastly orange) OpenDNS icon tray application been installed by an administrator user? This runs every now and then (hourly or four hourly I think) to ensure that if you have dynamically assigned IP address that OpenDNS can apply the required filtering. If present try removing the OpenDNS (Updater.exe?) application. S |
