All clear here, and Java updates applied. It's that fake Flash installer to blame - more social engineering.

I have Java turned off in my browsers. I don't need it, and I'm not entirely sure why it's still there.

Flash will go the same way eventually.

Apparently, you need it for XCode, so if you are a developer, you can't take it off your system.

I think Java's days are numbered too. It clearly never took off as the cross platform platform it was intended to be, and needs a quiet burial at sea when no one is looking, and where the rabid enthusiasts can't find it.

I think you might be right with regards to OS X, Paul, but on other platforms it's still surprisingly common. The whole suite of analysis tools we use in work are all written in Java, though it uses lots of Windows specific stuff so would never run on another platform. OS X was always problematic because it had a different UI and UI guidelines than other platforms.

Part of the problem as well is that developers don't think in a cross-platform way. I've used tonnes of tools written in C# or Java (and even a few C/C++) which don't work on my Mac because the developer was a Windows user and never thought that someones home directory would be anywhere other than "C:\Documents and Settings\%username%", or that path separators would be anything other than a backslash ("\"). Java provides ways of overcoming these things, but if the dev doesn't know/care then it won't be cross-platform.

We earn good money off of Java development. It is still used a lot. In corporates, it is probably only surpassed by Visual Studio and on web platforms it is second or third behind PHP and Ruby - probably number one, if you include modern corporate intranets.

Some of works software is Java driven so I doubt it will be dying any time soon

Checked my mac and no sign of problems but I do have AV software (Intego) as a matter of course.

Oh, joy. Whenever I start up Windows, I get nagged about a new Java update. I guess my Mac will start niggling me about these on a more frequent basis. If something needs that number of patches, I’m more inclined to not to want to bother with it.

If you don't have any websites which need Java, just uninstall it... :?

Java is not installed by default on Lion. However, when I first ran Adobe CS3, it required the Java runtime, so I had to install it.

My browsers have had Java switched off for years.

It's not websites I need it for...

Cyberduck, LibreOffice, TextMate, Eclipse, Netbeans and VirtualBox all require Java to an extent, as do the few apps I've written in, well, Java...
