<sweary noises> I was just off to buy a copy of snow leopard and I've actually for once got time this weekend to install it. However I've found that one app I regularly use (RapidWeaver) isn't compatible with it yet. Won't open saved files under SL. What the hell? What were they doing that an OS update broke their file loading code? Eejits. Jon |

Applications for Mac? You mean there are some? Seriously though guys (and girls) good thread. I posted somewhere else that I've got one eye on a Mac - will hopefully soon be both eyes - and I think this thread will be very useful when that day arrives. |

I find macupdate.com a great source of software, a mixture of free, shareware and commercial. Something for everyone. |

I don't think this link has been mentioned before, it's a nice collection of open source Mac software, with direct links. http://opensourcemac.org/ |

The vast majority of users don't bother with defragging. OS X does several things in the background to mitigate the need to defrag files in the first place (it's recommended that you try to keep at least 10% of a volumes capacity free to allow it to do so). Utilities are available - TechTool Pro, DriveGenius and iDefrag can all defrag a drive. An alternative is to use something like SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner to clone your drive onto a different one then clone it back as that achieves the same effect, is normally significantly faster and less likely to run into problems. If you do video production with big projects (multi GB files) it might be worth the effort but for general use I wouldn't bother (and if I did I'd go for the clone - clone back route). And finally, if you do decide to defrag anything make damn sure you have a working backup (or 2) in place before you proceed just in case things go south. |
