Post subject:  This wifi setup?

I'm wanting to install wifi in my Dad's house for when he gets a wifi Kindle.
At the moment he has a Netgear DG834 (non wifi) ADSL router. This is fine as his phone socket is next to his PC, so using a wired network isn't a problem.
I thought about replacing the DG834 with another wifi ADSL router, however that's much more expensive than just buying a wireless access point (probably another Netgear one). So my plan is to setup a network as outlined below (black = existing network, blue = planned).

My problem is that I know very little about networking.
The dg834 uses the default 192.168.0.1 address to get access to the settings. How would the wireless access point work? Would it be diven a different address by the DG834? If so, what? Would it try to give itself the same address causing a conflict?
I know it can be done, I just don't know how easy it will be to set up.

I'd apreciate any advice/comments.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe I was wrong about the cost.

Is this (CLICKY) Netgear DGN1000 a full ADSL router with wifi? If so, I'll just buy that to replace the DG834.

That looks like an ADSL router with wi-fi to me.

To answer your first question.

The wireless access point would send out addresses from your router by default. It's more of a media converter (wired to wireless) in a home network than anything actually complicated.

Thanks for the advice. I've just bought that router.
My current plan is that I'll take that as I can use the N wifi with my laptop, and my dad can have my old DG834PN and use the G wifi for kis Kindle.

Well no wonder it was so cheap. It's [LIFTED].
Every time Windows (my laptop and my wife's netbook) boot up, they connect to the wifi, but can't get internet.
I have to faff around in the network settings every time to get it to work on both. Seems to work for my phone okay though.
I'm not putting up with that, so my dad can have it. He won't use the wifi anytime soon anyway.

I think the problem seems to be that although it's one physical device, it shows up as a separate wifi access point and ADSL router. Not sure what difference that makes, or if it's a windows issue. Either way it isn't up to the job.

I've had problems with the DGN1000 and wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless there's been a significant update. Specifically, it doesn't understand how NAT is supposed to work. Typically it's fine if you only have one user!!

The N150 shows up as DGN1000 wifi in windows.

N150 isn't the model name - it's the specification for the wireless. Most manufacturers do an N150. It's wireless N with a speed of 150Mbps, as opposed to the more powerful N300 routers.
