Ok a really silly question. I'm going to stick a new HDD in my Machine due to problems with errors on it.

My back up and system image is on a USB connected external HDD.

When I boot onto the new HDD using a DVD with windows on it will I be able to select the system image to restore from ? :?

If it's a Windows 7 backup then you need a Windows system repair disk. You can make one from any Windows 7 machine using the backup tool. Boot from the disk and tell it where the image is.
