I just bought an iPod Touch at Dixons on the way through the airport...
Shouldn't it already have 3.0 on it, or shouldn't I be entitled to a free upgrade?

Is this one of the new touches? I would expect it to have 3.0 on it if so, if not, I believe touch owners have to pay for the updates. Something to do with licences and patents. *shrug*

It is a 32GB model, bought today, first registered today... Doesn't have the 3.0 software on it - iTunes offers to download it for an extra charge! I think it is a flaming cheek to want an extra tenner on a brand new piece of equipment, to bring it up to the current spec...

Great, and now, because I still have a UK credit card, it is telling me it is an invalid credit card, because I live in Germany!
Apple really need to learn that we are now living in a global village, and that credit cards have been internationally valid for several decades!

My Australian credit card still works for me for iTunes Store purchases, even though I live on the other side of the world. Perhaps you've not set up your account information correctly.
As for the 3.0 update, presumably your iPod still works on version 2? Mine did before I updated it.

Depends how long Dixons have had it in their stockroom. The 32gb probably isn't as big a seller as the 8gb and 16gb due to it's price, so it may have been hanging around a while.

I wouldn't bother updating it. What version is it? If its below 2.8 (IIRC) you can jailbreak it and enjoy Cydia.

It's all up to Dixon's, nothing to do with Apple... I'd get on to them and get them to refund for the upgrade.

I changed the payment method to Click-and-Buy, which takes the money directly from my bank account instead. Apple just refused the credit card, because it wasn't German... Although Air Berlin's German site took it earlier in the week! Yes. It is on 2. something. I just find it a bit of a cheek that products still "in channel" a few weeks after the release of 3.0 don't qualify for a free update on first registration... As for Dixons, that will be fun! Bought it at the airport on my way back to Germany, as the iPods are cheaper in the UK - with the update cost, it costs about the same as buying here! But getting a refund will cost me a fortune in international calls, I would think... And the store only opened yesterday, according to the staff! (The store was closed with a "Dixons coming soon" when I went through 2 weeks ago).

Seriously, I'd try contacting Apple support directly if I was you via email or the web page. I've found their support to generally be pretty good with iTMS purchases and the like. If you ask nicely for a refund of the update cost you will probably get it. And it won't cost you a bean. The UK link is http://www.apple.com/uk/support/itunes/store/buy_troubleshooting/I'd expect there to be a 'DE' equivalent if you want to go that way. Although it would probably be better if the software was smart enough to do a free download of the latest OS update on first connection and then charge after that. Jon

Yep, was going to give that a try Jon...
I'll update as/when I receive any feedback.

Whilst jailbreaking is technically wrong I do think apple have a cheek charging for updates. I have also found iphones go for almost £200 more unlocked, so guess what I'm downloading

It's been written countless times, but Apple charges for iPod touch software updates (and not iPhone updates) because of the different ways it accounts for income from the two devices. Under US law it has to charge for updates to the iPod touch that add new features, and from what I've read the charge has to be realistic - ie, they can't get away with a "token" charge of $1 or 1c.

That is correct Sarbans Oxlex, I believe. I fully understand that for existing owners, but to have to pay that after forking out for a brand new iPod, nearly a month after the update was released, that is challenging Caz for the "Cheeky One" title!

It's only been a few weeks. Surely you of all people would understand that stock already in the supply channel when the software was released would still be running the old software. A case of "buyer beware" perhaps?
