Post subject: | MobileMe to iCloud |
Now that MobileMe is dead I'm trying to find out if iCloud has the features from it that I need and it's worth my while upgrading to Lion, or if I should be looking elsewhere for my requirements. Other than my me.com email which appears to have made the transition OK despite still being on Snow Leopard, I had two other uses for MobileMe. 1. The iDisk Public Folder which I used to allow clients to access files that were too big to email. Is there anything like this on iCloud? Everything I've read about iCloud seems to be aimed at making files available to all your different computing devices, but I can't find anything about allowing selected access to others. 2. Email via the browser. I could check my MobileMe email on any computer that had a suitable web browser. Can I do this with iCloud? ATM I can't see how unless it requires Lion as a minimum. What about Windows clients? Any advice would be greatly received. |

1. No. 2. Yes. ![]() Long version. 1. I don't think this is available. There isn't an iDisk as such. You access the storage that you have through the apps that access it (if that makes sense). i.e. Pages uses iCloud to share documents between devices. You can never see just the documents you open up Pages and the documents are there on all your devices. 2. go to www.icloud.com and log in with you icloud account. From there you can use FindMyMac, Mail, Calendar and you can browse the shared iWork documents. |

You can't 'share' documents with iCloud any more - the documents are only accessible if they have your iCloud login. You can use DropBox for that though, and it's free (presuming you're not talking about GB's of data). Jon |

No, you would have to use Dropbox or similar. If you have a hotmail/live account, Microsoft are integrating it with your Skydrive account and large files will automatically be shared. There is a Skydrive app for OS X as well.
Use icloud.com instead of me.com for web email. There is a Windows client for icloud. https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1455 I found MobileMe very useful, but iCloud has added a bunch of features I don't need / use and removed all the ones I found useful. |

This change appears to have impacted Back to my Mac on my Mac Mini, which is a PPC system, so fixed to Snow Leopard. I can’t access screen sharing on it any more - well, I can but I have to use VNC. |
