Post subject:  Dead Time Capsule

My Time Capsule (1st gen - 1Tb) has died with all the symptoms of internal power supply failure - dead as the proverbial dorrnail. I had a different 1st gen TC fail before (in 2010 / 2011 probably) and a Premium Apple reseller replaced it out of warranty. The new Apple reseller won't replace the TC (I know it is old but it just sat unused in a box whilst I waited for the first to fail and the failure is a design overheating fault) for free. The cost of an official repair (i.e. replace with another 1st gen TC) is £300; a new TC (4th gen) "only" costs £250. So I am not going to "repair" the TC by replacing it with another 1st gen TC and I shan't replace it with a 4th gen TC that might die after too short a time either.

1) Does anyone know if the out-of-warranty replacement of 1st gen TCs with internal power supply failure is still going on?

2) There are third party repairers who will either repair the power supply and correct the overheating problem or fit an external power supply. Does anyone have any experience of non-Apple TC repairers in the UK?

Given the KB article that originally explained the extended warranty scheme isn't there any more, you'd assume not. Plus the scheme was over three years ago. Couldn't do any harm to send Apple UK customer support an email to find out a definitive answer though.

Not personally, but the one time I spoke to an Apple techy about a bit of service work, I suggested taking the defective item to my local 3rd party (Apple Certified) repair centre and their response was 'Oh, them? yeah... I'll give you the address to send it to us.'
