The DMIs (Driver Machine Interface, small computers with integrated touch screen) the drivers use to see the speedo, planning area, and various messages on the trains up here have a VGA connection on them which is routed around to the second man's side so that a trainee/trainer/assessor can plug in a portable monitor and view the information the driver is seeing without leaning over the driver.
The depot has some power tests coming up and it would be useful to know what speed they are currently going, but the equipment they are using can't go in the drivers cab. They are thinking about getting a monitor and running a VGA extension cable from the second man's side through the saloon, perhaps up to 30m away. The resolution of these screens are quite low, perhaps 800x600. I've read that 10m is quite a common 'max length', but have seen cables up to almost 50m. the only real info I can find is "The longer you go, the lower the resolution should be", but no real figures. Anyone know of any?
