Post subject: | Windows 8 Drivers |
Hi, I've got the MSI G41M-P28 motherboard in my Media Centre PC, and am going to try installing Windows 8, but I may have a problem... I did try it before, during one of the beta versions, and everything seemed to work, except for the sound, which only worked in stereo, not surround. Obviously I need surround sound, as this is a media PC. The last time I tried it I had the surround sound coming straight out of the PC, but it's now connected to an amp, via HDMI. Windows was automagically loading some Intel processor, which is why I suspect it wouldn't work, but I couldn't find any Windows 8 drivers anywhere, and still can't so my question, (eventually) is can anyone tell me where I can download Windows 8 (64 bit) drivers for the MSI G41M-P28 motherboard? I did try installing the WIndows 7 drivers from the DVD which came with the board, but Windows was having none of it... Thanks in advance, John. |

Thanks Alun, that's what I'd figured... What a pain! You'd think that, since I only built the PC in December 2011 that I'd be able to get drivers. I guess the next stage is to see if I can download a generic Windows 8 driver for the sound module? On second thoughts... since the sound is going through HDMI, making sure that I've got the latest graphics driver, (Radeon HD 6450) should be enough, shouldn't it? I must also remember to check that the on-board sound device is disabled in the BIOS, just to make sure that it doesn't cause any complications or embarassing mistakes with drivers ![]() |

If you're using hdmi from an 6450 make sure you install the full package from their site as it's got the hdmi audio driver in it. Then make sure windows is using hdmi for it's audio. As long as you set surround correctly in your codec pack you can leave windows sound on 2-channel & the amp will decode the prologic stream and give you surround on normal TV channels (some will be fake surround but it sounds rather good on the Onkyo I have) |

As a point of interest, which Onkyo do you have? I've got one as well, and I must say hat, for the price we paid, it really is a decent little box. I'll check the model number on mine in a little while, (Kalena is watching stuff, and I can't be bothered pulling bits of kit out and putting up with her complaining!) ![]() I think the installation issues might have been me worrying about nothing, as I installed it and everything's fine... except that I don't have the option to boot from Windows 7. I'll try and physically remove the drive with Win 7 on it, to make sure that Win 8 is still happy, and assuming it is I'll just switch to 8. Thanks all ![]() Edit to add: I've also set it up so that XBMC, which I installed as an alternative to Windows Media Center, auto-starts and the feedback I've received so far is that it's much easier to use than WMC. Might be useful information for some of you... |

Just seen the user guide and mine is the Onkyo HT-8390. Nice bit of kit, it's just a pity that there's only one HDMI output. Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2 |
