My iMac (Core Duo) doesn't like waking up from sleep mode. It sounds like the HDD is still spinning, but the screen is off and the sleep indicator light is pulsing. No amount of pressing keys on the keyboard or clickings of the mouse are working. (8+(
Anyone any idea what I can do to get it working as normal again? I use it as my media machine that connects wirelessly to the network and streams films/TV to my Apple TV.

Have you tried restarting it? Macs need a reboot every so often to clean out the scurf.
Otherwise, reset the PMU? Check the HD for problems?
Is it a Bluetooth keyboard? If so, low batteries?

Several times. Once it's in it's deep sleep the only way to get it back again is to press and hold the power button. I'll see about resetting the PMU *goes off to look for instructions* Wired keyboard, wired mouse. Mark

On laptops, real deep sleep is almost like the machine is off, and a press of the power button wakes them up. It takes a while as RAM contents & system state are registered from HD. Usually, the screen is displayed in a blurry monochrome and a progress bar is displayed. The portables tend to go into this mode if the battery has dropped below a certain level while the machine is asleep.
I don't have a modern iMac to compare your experience with. I don't recall seeing anything about a "deep sleep" in the new Mini's settings.

Some pages to look at. This one is related to a Mac Pro but may offer some help: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/43 ... 0&tstart=0http://macosg.com/group/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=21831http://apple.stackexchange.com/question ... -activatedhttp://apple.stackexchange.com/question ... acbook-proFrom what I can find out "deep sleep" is equivalent to Windows Hibernate, and does require a press of the power button to start it up. The HD spinning you hear is the deep sleep settings and system state being loaded from the drive. Hopefully the above links will give you things to think about or try. You really need to Google Mountain Lion disable deep sleep to see what comes up.

Thanks Paul. I looked at all the links you've provided, but I think the issue is that it's not actually sleeping at all (despite the blank screen and pulsing sleep indicator). After the resets I manually put the iMac to sleep and there's still something spinning. I don't know if it's a fan or the HDD, but something is still making a quiet whirring noise. I've attempted to wake from sleep and it's once again not responding. I think I'll have to force shutdown again then when I power it on again I'll check the disk for errors and try a repair of it too.

This: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/36 ... 0&tstart=0Have you got Wake for Net Access activated? If so, that may be causing it to stay more awake than you like. Dunno now - feel I am clutching at straws now.

Do you have another machine on the network? Can you ping the iMac? Can you SSH to it (will require 'remote access' to be on in Sharing prefs)?

Yes. Well, no, not any more. Just restarted the iMac and will test it again. Mark

Failing the Wake for Network Access being switched off working, I'll see about giving this a go. Mark

Taking off Wake for Network Access didn't solve the issue.

I tested pinging the iMac while it was awake, all pings connected. I cannot ping the iMac while it's in sleep mode.
