People are treating this iOS6 maps problem like it's the end of the world.
A couple of people I know are saying that Apple should have delayed the launch of the iPhone 5 to get the maps right or even launched the iPhone 5 without a maps app at all.
OK, there are some problems with the maps app but I haven't found any myself. The only problems I've seen are ones I have been pointed to by other people who have also read about them from the internet. (i.e. search for "Luton")
How many times have I ever searched for Luton in the past? None.
I've been using iOS6 maps for months and didn't notice anything wrong.
I reckon 99.9% of people have never used the maps before or wouldn't have noticed anything wrong themselves.
So, would you have noticed anything wrong without reading about it on the internet?

Yep, although it hasn't actually given me any trouble as a consequence because I don't use my phone as a satnav. We checked my friend's house by postcode, Maps just couldn't find it. We tried by address and it decided he lived in Stoke on Trent. He lives in Stockport.

I'll respond to this with my personal experience when I've updated my phone, but I reckon you're right, Oliver. Without the hoo-har it would largely have gone unnoticed, though to be fair to those screaming from the rooftops, large cities missing or incorrectly positioned is a bit of a screw-up.

Yes but these problems will get resolved over time and so ultimately this will be irrelevant to buyers. I have finally worked out to move pins to help correct the data, so hopefully soon my local map will improve.

"ultimately" isn't soon enough if you're lost now! These are very expensive bits of kit, and historically Apple do not release products that aren't entirely polished. It seems fairly evident that Maps is well below the standard expected. Although, 100 million devices updated and how many complaints..? :edit: - I voted Pie because I don't have an iOS device.

I rarely use maps, when I do it's mainly out of interest (e.g. where is X roughly, or what's near Y).
I use Navmii for a satnav which isn't effected by the iOS 6 maps app, though since upgrading it doesn't appear to be able to stop the screen from going to sleep...

Yes, given the apparent lack of detail in some areas, errors with road layouts etc.

Rant:
I've checked two places, one where I live and one where I work (both in London) and there are mistakes all over the place. River marked as a park and vice versa, places and streets missing, places moved hundreds of metres from their actual positions and the lack of detail is shocking. I wouldn't be able to rely on these maps if i was to go somewhere i've never been before. Not to mention that google maps provide public transport directions and planning, complete with departure times.
I can't believe apple actually released these maps, it looks like a homework project of a 3rd grader. They should have release them while still having google maps available to people who actual use their phones tools, not just to fling birds and play fart sounds.

Didn't really use the Google version, haven't looked at the Apple version. Last time I used a map app on my phone was driving up to north Devon at the weekend, and that was one of my two free sat nav apps.

You want to look for Sawbridgeworth. It's not where Apple tells you it is.

That wasn't the question though. Would you have searched for those things if you hadn't heard about the problems in the news? Would you have used the maps app at all?

I use the google apps quite a lot to see where stuff is. I can see their reasons for replacing it, but as it stands, it doesn't work. They should have kept google maps until their own was finished. It's why I'm not updating at the moment.

I use maps all the time. London is too big to know by heart, expecially public transport. When I go out I don't need to worry about how to get home no matter where I am. Google maps will plan my journey home and will give me live bus departures. It will also combine tube and buses together if neccessary. Btw, just look at "find my iPhone" app review if you want to know what people think about maps.

The guys at work were complaining, mainly because the town where we work isn't displayed properly on maps. Add to that, that some streets aren't on their or misplaced, it makes using the navigation a real pain! That said, i was in Bremen yesterday and the navigation system in the Mercedes CLS was totally screwed up, missed turnings and had us turn around 3 times!
