When I've needed a web server, I've always installed Apache. Always. I considered it the de-facto standard.

However, a lot of the busiest websites now use ngnix. Although I only recently heard about it, it's been in use for quite a few years. It seems to have many advantages over Apache.

I'm migrating our websites onto a new server. Should I stick with what I know, or is it time to move on?

Also, not sure which forum to put this in. It's definitely Network related, but also Interwebs, Open Source and PC Software; or maybe "posting in the meeting place for maximum exposure."?

Thoughts?

Thanks :)

I've only ever used IIS or Apache.

I'll give it a look. I seem to remember it being announced, then it pretty much disappeared from the public eye.

I only ever used IIS under duress

Thankfully, only ever for Intranet services. Our helpdesk software and the Avaya software use it.

I've only used Apache, so can really only comment on that, but I've heard good things about nginx's speed as it's an event-based server rather than a process-based server (the former uses a single (or very few) thread and so scales well, the latter spawns a thread (or threads) for every connection).

As for why I'm using Apache - it's familiarity and knowledge really, and also the fact that I've not really experienced the scaling issues that Apache has because I'm not running any sites of that capacity :)
