I am going post Christmas treat myself to a Tablet. At the moment I am leaning towards the Nexus 10 - however I see that its out of stock on the Google Play store - does anyone know when its due back in as I am unwilling to pay 3rd party a premuim just to get one
If anyone has any other ideas re which on to get happy to listen Will be used on the daily commute to watch movies etc and a bit of surfing at home. Dont really need 3G and if I find that that becomes important I can always get a mifi / tether it off my phone

Just don't get one of those Samsung iPad-alikes. We got one in work, as we're going to be teaching app development on both iOS and android. It's been sat on the bosses desk for a week, in a leather cover, and the plastic back is already discoloured and scuffed. The touch surface is rubbish too. And none of us like android, but that's another issue entirely. But yes, apparently Samsung can't build a tablet. Which is odd.

I was looking at tablets at the weekend. I'm still not sure what I would use one for, but looking at what was on offer (the iPads, 10 or 15 different Android devices and half a dozen different Windows RT and Windows 8 tablets), I think I'd probably buy a Windows 8 tablet at the moment - mainly because I could also use it as a notebook / plug it into a docking station and external monitor and use it on the desktop...
That said, my Sony Vaio notebook isn't 3 years old yet and the addition of the Logitech touchpad makes a huge difference to using Windows 8 - I spend 99% of my time using it in my home office with external keyboard and mouse/tablet.

If I could stretch to it – and will see what I get for Xmas - then I would like an ultrabook but that’s a few quid (!) more than a tablet. I currently use a netbook but it can’t handle HD encoded stuff so sometime I have to re-encode to a lower resolution

The media players on tablets tend to be fussy about the format, so I usually have to re-encode even if I'm not changing the resolution.

That's Tap-tastic, but the 20" screen is only the same resolution as my 13" Vaio (1600x900). The pixels would be a well over twice as big as the laptop and about the same as a 24" TV. Fine for viewing from afar, but I wouldn't want to use that close-up. Tablets are close-up devices; even more so than a laptop. My 23" monitor on the other hand is 2048x1152 giving about the same high pixel density. Likewise, my phone and tablet work out roughly the same. I would not want to downgrade to anything less. We are well into the 21st century. Why are we still being sold screens with no better resolution than a 1990 CRT? I can understand it for cheapo devices, but not for something costing a month's wages.

HP Touchpad. I can't say I'd recommend it, although at the time it was probably the best quality available for the price. There's a better choice now. I use the standard media player because the alternatives are quite expensive and really not that good. There's not much software for it and I find it too heavy to use comfortably. My mum likes it though because the WebOS interface is really slick and intuitive. I may in the future dual boot WebOS on a Nexus 7 or similar, but it's not ready yet. On my Android phone I tend to use RockPlayer. It's not that good, but it's better than the alternatives I've tried. It does play most things, but handles subtitles inconsistently. I usually have to re-encode to mp4 with hard-subs, because that gets hardware accelerated and you know the subs will work.
