I have been looking at 1Password as a way to beef up my internet security, to generate more complex passwords and remember them for me.

I was about to take the plunge, when I began to wonder why I really needed it. Chrome remembers passwords for me and it is free. Surely if I just got a good enough password generator then I could use Chrome instead? Or have I missed something obvious?

Are there any 1Password users here? What are your views on the app?

I use it and love it. It can make entering passwords on the desktop so easy. Once you have set it up and have checked they work it can be as a two key stroke command to enter a password. Also once set up it can be easy to sync with other iOS devices. You can set it to keep as many complex passwords as you need. You can randomly generate them so you can have different passwords for every site. That makes every account more secure because you are not using the same password for everything. So if any account is hacked they will not have access to any other password.

You can also keep all your software serials and credit card details so buying online is simpler.

I use it mainly as a way to sync that kind of data between several macs than due to security concerns tbh. It works pretty well overall. The browser plugin is a bit naggy though - for me it keeps asking if I want to save credentials for web sites it's already got them saved for anyway.

Don't trust Chrome, FF, IE, Safari etc. to store your passwords, especially not syncing them!

I use LastPass, which has been independently verified and given a seal of approval as secure - the platform doesn't know your key, so they cannot decrypt your password and the process used to encrypt and transfer the key is secure.

I use LastPass in combination with a YubiKey.

By who? All a 'seal of approval' does is pass the point of trust further up the line. Of itself it doesn't mean a thing.

Well I've purchased 1Password on my iPhone, and have the evaluation copy on my MacBook, I'll buy it from the MAS on my iMac when I get home (my MacBook is running SL and is 32-bit, the version on the MAS is 64-bit).

It's already giving me a bit more piece of mind

I've also set up 2-step authentication for a number of things I do online too.

Looking at it all, for someone interested in tech, it's taken me an embarrassingly long time to get my online security in any fit state.

Steve Gibson from Security Now podcast. He also spent over an hour describing exactly how LastPass works on his podcast.

The next step is to run through your safari passwords and to slowly enter them into 1Password and then delete the Safari passwords. That eliminates the risks from someone stealing the mac. They would need the 1Password master password to do any damage. The latest versions sync automatically through iCloud and even allowing for a time lag works pretty well.

I use Chrome, but all my passwords have already been erased.

Next step is make sure it does not save passwords. Not sure how to do that right now.
