Can someone point me in the direction of, or help me with a step by step guide to setting up Wi-fi with the latest Ubuntu offering on a netbook (Advent 4211)?

I'm talking the basics cos I'm at my wits end with it, especially after trying Wi-fi Radar only for it to tell me it couldn't find some directory (that was after installing Python 3 and various other baffling bits and pieces).

Any help would be greatly appreciated before I wind up reinstalling XP :(

What exactly is the issue?

Have you tried using NDISwrapper to install the Windows drivers for your wi-fi card?

It's a known bug unfortunately.

I don't think I can be annoyed with any more fannying about tbh - Ubuntu keeps adding a line of crap to the password box whether trying to start the Wi-fi or just in it's own settings. It doesn't wanna let me save the BSSID or MAC address or anything else either.

Yeah, I think I'm giving up then... It's a shame I like what you can do with Ubuntu initially, but a netbook without Wi-fi's gonna be pretty pointless :x

Don't blame Ubuntu for shoddy support from Advent.

And... breathe ;)

I'm not blaming Ubuntu. I'm not blaming Advent either. I'm just annoyed that I can't get it to work :x

Out of interest, what made you go for the Advent? There are so many netbooks that work flawlessly with UNR, such as the ASUS 10" Eee.

It's actually Realtek that is at fault here, the driver for their wifi card is still in "internal beta" stage and pretty useless.

I'm not even using the remix, as I only found out about it once I'd installed ordinary Ubuntu.

I wanted a netbook, wasn't even thinking about Ubuntu at the time, figured I'd try it instead of having to use AV software with XP...

Have you tried UNR? It contains a lot of stuff for netbooks that standard Ubuntu does not. It works with both models of the MSI Wind, so it should work with the Advent, hopefully.

Isn't there something about using your current Ubuntu installation to overwrite it with UNR? :?

Unfortunately that link I supplied earlier is from the UNR compatibility page - same driver used.

Listen, don't worry about it, all in it'll be quicker to reinstall XP :)

All in all I'd say save for a Mac with OS X on it, they just work you know ;) :P.
