Vodafone has warned it's UK customers with the iPhone 4S not to upgrade to iOS 6.1.

Texts were sent out to iPhone 4S handsets on the network yesterday evening.

According to the company Apple's 6.1 update causes problems making calls, sending texts and accessing the internet.

Vodafone claims Apple is working on a solution and that the connection problems are intermittent.

Haven't seen (and a quick Google doesn't show) anything from any other vendor. That suggests it's either a specific interaction with Vodafone's network, or Vodafone have the wrong end of the stick. Having dealt with Vodafone's 'technical level' support on several occasions, I can strongly suspect it's the latter.

Guess we'll have to wait and see if anyone else makes an announcement. Course, it would have helped if they'd made the announcement before a large chunk of their users have probably already installed the update.

Same for me. I would have thought that the vast majority would have already upgraded by the time this was released. It must be the way that Vodafone handles calls etc. That should be the first area to look at rather than wait for Apple to release an Vodafone friendly update.

Fine for me on 3, also.
I think Gav is having some issues. Not sure on his network.

The problem is that statement couldn't be more vague if they tried. 'Some customers may occasionally experience intermittent difficulties we're going to be almost entirely inexplicit about'? If they've got a specific problem, they should tell people what it is. If they're claiming Apple have a fix in the pipe, that means they've had discussions with Apple and there's a specific thing that Apple are patching. How is anybody supposed to be able to tell if they've got this problem or just your usual occasionally variable mobile reception?

And even if they have, what people supposed to do about it? You can downgrade the OS on an iPhone but it's an enormous pain in the arse to do. And why are only some customers on some networks affected? OK, Apple's bug, you assume. But Voda's customer service approach is sodding awful.

I guess no one can tell you what the fault is until Apple have found out what the fault is. In the mean time, the advice being given is the only advise that can be given.

Vodafone's release on Friday said:

"Some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the Internet. Apple is working on a solution to their software issue. These connection problems are intermittent.

While Apple’s investigations continue, we would recommend that anyone who has not yet installed iOS 6.1 on their iPhone 4s should delay doing so until Apple has confirmed that their problem has been fixed."

There's no suggestion that Vodafone (or any other carrier) actually know exactly what the problem is, and Apple are still investigating. They just know the symptom, which is intermittent connectivity. It appears to effect several different carriers in different countries.

When Apple figure it out, they'll release a fix. Then we'll maybe find out what the technicalities of the problem were - although most people really couldn't care less about the details of some obscure protocol negotiation failure; they just want it fixed and working.

Admittedly it's a fine distinction, but this is the point about lack of specific information and consistency; To me the quote

Suggests they already know what the problem is and are already coding a patch. This is the problem, you've got two ISPs saying things that are so non-committal they end up being contradictory if you actually read them (I'm pretty much sure nobody technical say those press releases before they went out). If you look at the press releases, they actually say nothing. Genuinely, you're no better off having read them. Everything they say you would reasonably assume was true anyway.

'There's a bug. Some people are trying to fix it.' Wow. Thanks for that.

I get this all the time. Microsoft for example are awful for it (tip: If Office 365 goes wrong, don't expect to be told about it. Don't expect to be told when it's coming back. Expect to get some vague information about what happened several weeks later). Apple are notoriously backward at coming forward. The ISPs & mobile providers put out press releases that are always less useful than the The Register article on whatever the problem is.

If we're in the period of 'Software As A Service' and communications as a service, then the service we are getting is rubbish.

There must be something that both they and Vodafone are doing differently if so many of us are okay.

It appears that the problems relate to the iPhone 4s

Well Apple disagrees as they issued a patch for 4s: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1631

You've got to give Apple credit for the speed at which they've patched this.

Yes it was fast but I suspect that there are a lot of 4s out there.
