I'm getting a tablet and want to transfer my stuff over. I know I can just re-download all the apps, but with Android being "open" does anyone know a free way to transfer the apps and their data easily? I don't want to pay for a solution, even if it's just 50p!

It's not the end of the world if I lose the data (mostly just silly games lol), but it will take me a while to re-download them since I have quite a few now.

On the other hand, if I just download the ones I want when I need them it will get rid of any clutter I don't really use. There's a plus side to either approach.

Frustratingly, the Nexus 7 doesn't have an SD slot I think! I'm going for it anyway, because it seems like the best small tablet available and it's got quite a lot of memory anyway - 32GB. I only have about 800MB of apps and data! The rest is just music, videos and photos, which are easy to move.

I can transfer files across by USB or WiFi but I don't know how the games store their progress. I suspect it's not as simple as just copying some folders over, but I could be wrong.

I was just wondering if anyone had some neat tricks, or if starting from scratch is how how most people do it.

I do have a couple of file managers and my AV does some backups, so I need to look at those properly.

That's exactly the problem I have.

There are backup apps that will do the job. Some of them need both devices to be rooted, and none that I've found are free. If it's important to you, then it may be worth the few quid for a decent solution. I'm just too tight, and more interested if a clever "hack" is possible.

I should have the Nexus by Friday so I'll have a really good play next weekend.

It's hard to explain but I'm really wary of paying for proper apps, even games. You look at reviews and everything, but you can almost guarantee that one 'obvious' bit of functionality you're after is missing it seems

It's nearly as bad when your "free" app needs in-game purchases to make it playable...

Having been through iOS, Windows Phone and Android, plus Windows, Linux and OS X, I am very wary about buying software these days.

I'll buy the staples on Windows and OS X, but on a mobile device, I'm more choosy. I spent a lot of iOS apps, when I first got my iPhone, but found that I spent 90% of my time using 4 or 5 free apps and they are available on all platforms, so I've bought less and less paid for software.

On iOS, I bought around 20 apps, on Windows Phone 7 around 8 and on Android I have paid for 1 app, because I thought it was that good (in-app purchase to open up additional functionality).

What I really like is the Microsoft Store. You can download a free version of most apps, which have some functionality limits (E.g. games have limited levels, productivity apps have document size restrictions or time restrictions). If you like the app, you can purchase it and the version that you downloaded is opened up to full functionality.

That means that you can try most apps before buying, but you don't clutter your purchase history with "app LITE" and "app" versions. That is something I really hate on iOS and Android.

I've not found need for a "productivity" app yet, where the free offering was at least as good as any paid for.

Only real exception was RDP. Even the paid for apps only support basic RDP and not Remote Applications (where you just run one app, not the desktop) and the navigation is difficult on all of them. I only use it in an emergency, so the free one I have is "good enough" even though it could be much better. That's mostly just down to the limitations of the phone format though, and one reason why I'm dumping my smart phone for a tablet + normal phone.

I use Things which can be synced with iPad and macs. Not sure if it is available for Android. It takes some work to get set up but it is a dream when it comes to using the app. I use the computer as my master record and edit them on the computer. The iPhone and iPad apps load all the data and you can check them off as you complete them and as it syncs via Things cloud it means that they are shown as completed on the other devices a few seconds later.

That sounds like "Tasks" which I admit I don't use as often as I could. I go through phases of adding loads to it, then just forget about it. I deleted a load of things that were about 3 years overdue recently

Yes but for me as an amnesiac it is brilliant. It resets each day with new tasks and because I can mark a task as complete on any device and it shows as completed on the others it is fantastically simple for me to keep on top of. It still requires me to remember to use it, though that is made easier by having it in my iMacs and iPad dock and on my main app screen on the iPhone. In fact because I now have a number of devices that I use it on, I can clear the completed tasks on the iMac which clears the screens on the iOS devices. It makes chores easier to deal with because I can deliberately spread them around the week or month, so not too much on any one day.
