It looks like the next version of iOS is to get a flat look reminiscent of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. I'm hoping they aren't just getting rid of the skeumorphism,
“Flat” design is based on simplicity and pushes aside heavy textures and digital metaphors of real-life objects found in skeumorphic interfaces. “Flatness” could also point to a more streamlined interface across the entire system that can stand the test of time.
I certainly hope so. The current version of iOS, and OS X for that matter, are a bit of a mess and the are looking very dated. I like the flag look of Windows. I hope they Jonny also nabs some other ideas from WP8, the live tiles are a lot more useful than the plain icons that KOS currently has.

I like the look of the Windows phone UI. Yes the current version of iOS is looking dated but if they change it they need to avoid looking like the Windows phone. Though it also needs to be natural to use, and logical in its layout, otherwise that will add to the learning process. Though the designers here are probably better suited to debate this.

I can't imagine Apple will copy Metro closely enough to get into legal hot water over. However some level of 'flattening' of the OS is likely, and in fact nothing new. Mac OS X has been getting 'flatter' pretty much since it started - compare the scroll bars in Mac OS Mountain Lion :-

to the ones in earlier versions of Mac OS...

The most recent OSX scroll bars come of iOS. There has been a strategy of trying to make the two systems more similar, so people coming from iOS to Mac OS X would feel that they were on familiar ground.

I think what must people are hoping for is the reduction or removal of the skeuomorphic elements of the interface. The sooner the faux leather goes the better.

I guess the metaphors are redundant now that more people have a smart phone than have ever seen a slider control or a push button on a music centre...

When did you last see a radio with "radio buttons"?

It's like listening to someone else's iPod stuck on random.

And they keep talking about things in between the tracks.

The last time I listened to the radio, they played a track every now and again to punctuate the boredom of the so-called DJs banal chit-chat about nothing in particular.
I don't listen to the radio any more, and haven't done for quite a few years.
I don't miss it one bit.

Why would you want to copy MS's fail?

I don't listen to music radio, except occasionally when I'm driving.

I don't listen music radio except when I'm driving and the news is on. Otherwise it's either CDs or Talk Sport for me.

I do listen to the BBC, primarily Radio 4 and Radio 4 Extra and occasionally Radio I, 2 and 6. I cannot remember when I last listened to a commercial radio station, it might have been Radio Luxembourg and Radio Tirana.

What fail? WP8 phones are a lot nicer to use than the iPhone IMHO. And I wouldn't swap my Windows 8 tablet or laptop for Windows 7...

Each to their own. XP was a huge fail, when it came out, people stuck with 2000 or 98 for a long time, moaning about how bad it was, now they are clinging to it as if it was the last life vest at the sinking of the Titanic...
