Hi I seem to be having a problem with my MacBook Pro at the moment - often, if the display goes to sleep, I can't get it out of that mode unless I shut the lid... which can be a bit troublesome if I've got something unsaved, or have been recording something. Obvious answer I suppose is to not put display to sleep, but it's not really "fixing" it... I've got a 2.4ghz 2009 MBP (think it's 2009, might be 2008 - can't check here!) running 10.8. Any obvious suggestions? I intend t do some 'housekeeping' on it over the weekend (fixing permissions etc etc) to see if that helps, but anything else that might need looking at? Thanks! Ben |

Do you need sleep mode. If not I use a program called caffeine that keeps the screen active and so stops it sleeping. It is free, from Macupdate.com. It is a tiny menu bar application. Use that to see if that helps. |

I have caffeine to keep the screen active at times though I have had problems in the past with it failing to recover after sleep. |

I have one of the new Macbook Pros (non-Rentina) running 10.8 and the waking behaviour seems to have changed slightly from earlier versions of OS X - on mine, you have to press the power button to wake it up, whereas earlier versions of OS X I think you could just press any key on the keyboard or the trackpad button. Have you tried pressing the power button to wake it up from sleep? |

Thanks guys... I suppose I don't *need* it to sleep, but I've been doing a lot of real-time recording where I've been leaving it to do it's thing... and if I've left the app on mute and the screen goes dead, I can't tell if it's finished... or if I've just left it alone for a while and come back and I have to shut the lid... usually not so much a problem - just annoying! I can set never to sleep, but didn't want to damage the screen by leaving it on for long periods unused. (I'd read screen savers on LCDs aren't really much use?!) My system as a whole though is painfully slow to get going on start-up, so I'm considering a clean re-install to iron out a lot of bugs... just not looking forward to making sure all installers/apps etc are accounted for before I do it! ![]() |

That way simply pressing a key or the mouse or whatever will reactive the screen and you're not killing it by having it active all the time. Mark |

Checked the settings - computer is set only to sleep after 3 hours, and screen sleep after 15 mins... it's the screen sleep that isn't waking up.... I think I might need a bit of a system overhaul, as I'm getting several speed issues (like Spotify taking minutes to load up!?!). Thanks for the replies! |
