Hi all,

Whats the current thinking on processors? I'm looking for a new PC for work, it'll be used for the usual office applications plus some numerical simulation (typically single threaded) and programming (NI labview - if you call that programming!).

So I'm looking at the current business A lister from PCPro (not sure if that's considered a rude word on here!) which is the lenovo M58. It comes in a couple of options - one of which has a core 2 duo E8400 (3GHz) the other a core 2 quad Q8200 (2.3GHz). Although I will be multitasking, would I benefit more from the extra clock speed of the E8400 or the 4 cores of the Q8200...

Anyone got any advice?

Cheers

Paul

I would imagine the fast duel will be better for your use.

I should add that the labview programming "IS" multithreaded (or at least, Labview will use all available cores - whether the code I write "needs" that is a slightly different question!)

Cheers!

Can anyone spell dual?

duel - a prearranged combat between two persons, fought with deadly weapons according to an accepted code of procedure, esp. to settle a private quarrel.

dual - composed or consisting of two people, items, parts, etc., together; twofold; double: dual ownership; dual controls on a plane.

Do you feel better now? By the way, you didn't answer his question.

Overclocking? Then overclock a slow quad core.
If not, a fast duel core would be better.

If you are over clocking the E8400 will be better, the kwad core Q8200 is a poor over clocker.
